The Trans Journalists Association runs online spaces for discussing journalistic coverage of trans issues and trans issues in the newsroom.

The TJA reserves the right to reject membership requests from anyone with a documented and/or ongoing record of harassment, abuse, hate speech, or other violations of our code of ethics.

General membership criteria

Some spaces are reserved for our trans, nonbinary, and gender-expansive members. If you are a cisgender ally and a journalist, you can join our spaces journalists of all gender identities.

Community agreements

  • We affirm the rights, dignity, autonomy, and humanity of transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive people, and their freedom to participate fully in public life.
  • We agree that all conversations in the TJA Slack are private and off the record, except with the explicit permission of all parties involved. However, externally reposting public links, resources, and other toolkits — without commentary — is allowed.
  • We agree to not publicly repost summaries or screenshots of any discussions held here.
  • We agree to not use any information we read here in any reporting, unless it is explicitly provided as a tip.

  • We agree to refrain from attempting to identify anonymous posters.
  • We agree to engage with different experiences, opinions, and viewpoints with good faith and mutual respect.
  • We agree to be thoughtful about our posts and provide content warnings where appropriate or where requested when discussing potentially sensitive topics.
  • We agree to avoid abusive language and harassment.
  • We agree to avoid marketing and solicitation, including sharing press releases, requests for coverage, or other forms of advertising. Sharing journalistic or journalism-adjacent work, events, job listings, or freelance opportunities is permitted.
  • We agree to be thoughtful of each others’ time, energy, and labor. Time-intensive resume reviews, sensitivity reads, policy revisions, or newsroom training requests should be negotiated outside of this group. This community is not intended as a replacement for consulting services, though it may facilitate them.
