Beyond the “culture war”: How to cover trans issues well in an election year

Workshop date: Feb 27, 1-4pm CT

Registration fee: $35

Instructor: Trans Journalists Association

Registration: RJI Submittable Form

With 75 anti-LGBTQ bills passed into law in 2023, state legislatures and local policymakers have already begun proposing more restrictions on trans people this year. Questions around these regulations, enforcement and their impact on society are already a central topic in the political rhetoric around the 2024 elections.

This three-hour interactive workshop will help you understand the cross-beat complexities of news stories relevant to trans communities and their access to healthcare, education, and public accommodations.

We'll teach you the following:

  • How to think through editorial decisions about selecting, framing, and telling stories about trans people and communities
  • Key things to know about the state legislative landscape, and how/where local and federal policies can interact with them
  • Crash course in finding and using data about LGBTQ+ people, focusing on trans issues
  • History and context on trans healthcare in context of best practices in health reporting

This workshop was developed by the RJI Innovation Team in collaboration with the Trans Journalists Association.
