Join the Trans Journalists Association and Charlie's Queer Books for a free community screening of Heightened Scrutiny on Thursday, July 23, 2026 at 5:30 pm PT.
The documentary follows Chase Strangio, the first out transgender person to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court, as he challenges Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth in United States v. Skrmetti. Through interviews with journalists including Jelani Cobb, Lydia Polgreen, and Gina Chua, alongside advocates such as Laverne Cox, the film examines how media coverage has shaped public understanding of transgender issues and influenced legislation affecting trans communities.
Following the recent Supreme Court decision upholding Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care for transgender youth, Heightened Scrutiny offers an opportunity to reflect on the role of journalism, media narratives, and accurate reporting in moments of profound public consequence.
This screening is free to attend with RSVP. Donations are encouraged and will support the Trans Journalists Association's mission to advance accurate, nuanced coverage of trans communities and support the careers of gender-expansive journalists.
